Ric Curtis
Ric Curtis is a Professor of Anthropology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice who has been involved with the range of issues centered primarily in New York City since he started at John Jay in 1988. The former Chairman of the department, his research agenda has featured such diverse topics as police crackdowns on street level drug markets, HIV/AIDS and disease transmission among injecting drug users, drug overdose and prevention, sex work among adults and teenage boys and girls, undocumented immigrant victims of violence, forced marriage and honor killings in the US, gangs and violence, and many others. He is particularly interested in developing young scholars in the field, especially freshmen, and many of his research projects involve large numbers of students that accompany him to the field to collect data.
Outside of John Jay, he has been deeply involved with the “Harm Reduction” movement and has helped establish 4 separate non-profit agencies that address issues of HIV/AIDS, drug abuse and overdose, and homelessness: Boom Health, Inc. in the South Bronx.
