Greetings and Welcome to my Writer’s Profile,
My name is Cindy Guiracocha. I am a sophomore attending John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I am currently majoring in Law and Society. I was born in Astoria, New York, and raised in Maspeth, New York. I have always had a passion for music and art. At the age of 7, my father placed me into a musical conservatory where for seven years I learned how to play the piano. I have had the pleasure to musically perform four times in front of more than 20 classmates and their families. At times of stress, sketching, drawing, looking at art, learning about art, and then writing about art help me to momentarily remove myself from the stress of living in a New York life. My parents are both from Ecuador. My father at the age of 22 and my mother at the age of 18 migrated to New York on December 22,1988. Having a Hispanic culture along with an American culture has influenced me to invest my time in pursuing an understanding on the differences between people from different cultures. Contrasts between individuals inside any given country or culture are much more prominent than contrasts between factions. Education, social class, religion, identity, beliefs, history, at home relationships, as well as other factors help influence an individual’s culture and behavior. I have been fortunate enough to be given opportunity to be a writer in this Zine. For me, writing is a way to express who you truly are, to find your identity, and reveal your inner thoughts. Based on this and being a Hispanic/American female, I will be focusing my writing on understanding cultural differences that unite and divide countries. Through a retrospective and contemporary perspective, I will write about cultural diffusion, and cultural infusion within different countries, and societies. |
